Update Thursday September 11, 2003 To honor those who died in the tragedies
of 911 as well as those who have died since both in terrorist attacks and
fighting to end terrorism, today's front page will be devoid of color.
Please take a minute today to remember and honor those who have sacrificed
so much.
While obviously every person who
died was a tragedy, I personally felt one more than others and would
especially like you to remember Amy O'Doherty who had been in four of my
classes. She worked for Cantor-Fitzgerald.
I encourage you to read some of
the stories that were posted from people from my classes as they happened
during that tumultuous time. WARNING: some of these stories are quite
troubling even now, two years removed I put them on, not to scare or
to induce unpleasant memories, but so that we can all remember how tragic
the attacks were and so that we will be even more motivated to find a
peaceful solution.
The first link is a report
on the safety of those that we
had heard from as we heard. Remember when this was happening we
really did not know how bad it was going to be and feared that casualties
would be much higher than they turned out to be (I remember hearing radio
reports fearing 25,000 or more would die). A few days later I was
lucky enough to hear from some other students I had had in class. One
of them Andy Kernan who I had had the year before in class. September
11, 2001 was his second day at his new job. He gave a first-hand
report that to this day terrifies me. The final one is a response
from a newsletter subscriber who at the time I did not know. Luma
is a good friend now, but this was my first encounter with her. She is
from Syria and shares her views on the attacks and ends with a call for
peace that is as relevant today as it was in September
2001.
And my initial responses to the
attacks came in a series of newsletters. While the September 11th issue was
merely a call for information, both the September
14th and September
21st newsletters actually tie the events to various finance
classes. Amazing how interesting some of it is. Not all of the
story links work, but worthwhile none-the-less. How did I write that
stuff? What was I thinking? I must have had a lot of help!
Here are other sites that
remembers 911 with real articles from that day and are excellent! (I
will add both to my history pages when I get time). http://web.archive.org/collections/sep11.html
and http://911digitalarchive.org/websites/
While not strictly speaking a 911
topic, you may want also want to to read the now somewhat famous Editorial
on a Financial Response to Terrorism
. I wrote it before the war with Iraq started but much of it
seems to be very relevant today. And finally some Letters
in response to editorial. Some liked it and some hated it, you
decide..
who is feeling sad right
now. Rehashing the tragedy on top of losing a VERY good friend this
week is about as much as I can take. The world would be so much better
if people and nations could all get along. :(
