History Reading List
I really enjoy history and thought you might like
to see some of the books I have especailly enjoyed or want to read soon.
-
What
if? Wow! Makes you think. Imagine what happenied if the weather
had changed, or if Hitler had gone Southeast rather than Northeast.
Or if....granted not historically accurate in an academic sense, but interesting
none-the-less.
-
The
Biography of George Washington by John Alden. Of course
we know that Washington was first president but it is amazing how well
respected he was and still is! listen
to it for free!
-
Jefferson
and Monticello. A biograghy (and yes that is teh word I wanted)
of the man and the plantation. Very interesting. If you haven't
been to Monticello, go! Listen
to the book for Free!
-
James
Madision, The Founding Father. A biography of James Madision.
Having taught at JMU I had to listen to this and I am very glad I did.
We owe many of our freedoms to him. Listen
to it for free!
-
Witness
to Gettysburg. Gettysburg was in many ways the beginning of the end
for the Confederacy. Try to imagain a war in your front yard.
This is that story.
-
To
the Gates of Richmond. Outnumbered but not beaten Robert E. Lee out
foxes the North and gives the South a chance to win. Long but worth it!
Shows what a differnce a leader can make. Lee was McClellan was not.
-
The
American Civil War in the West. The West is often forgotten in
Civil War Discussions, but winning the Mississippi was as important to
the eventual result as many of the Eastern victories both from a strategic
as well as a morale perspective.
-
The
Duel : 10 May - 31 July 1940 : The Eighty Day
Struggle
Between Churchill and Hitler by John Lukacs. The book is out
of print, why I have no idea, but is the story of how Churchill basically
held the fort agaisnt Hitler until the world (read that as the US) finally
came around to helping.
-
Endurance.
With a name like that can it be bad? Seriously a gripping book.
Icebound for months on end. Amazing. ALso note this book has
climbed the charts for years. I read it in 1998. Very very
good!
-
Undaunted
Courage: the Lewis and Clark story. (ok so I have the title wrong)
The excitement of going on a hiking trip where no English speaker had ever
been. How did they ever make it? No real maps, no gore-tex,
no cell phones ;-) Great book!
-
John
Ransom's Andersonville Diaries Incredible is the only word I
can use to explain it. How anyone could live is beyond me.
When reading it, make sure you note the role of a positive attitude and
keeping busy played in the survivors eventual success.
-
Up
Against All Hope Yes, they are bringing it back! It had been
unavailable! The story of Armando Valladares' stay in Cuban Prisions.
While not as bad of conditions as in Andersonville, they were still terrible.
Even Castro backers will find this an incredible story of brutality and
the will to live. Listen
to it for free.
-
I
Will Bear Witness is a diary reconstructed-recap of Nazi Germany from
1933-1941. Fascinating and horrible! How could people do such
things?
Reading
is a thing that I love to do but rarely have time. I have become
a BIG backer of Books-On-Tape.
Where else can you "find" time?! and Time is our most valuable resource.
I am constantly listening to several books.
These books are in no particular order but are all very good or, if I have
not yet read then, at least appear interesting to me!
