The Alumni
office emailing this letter to over 5000 alumni in
the coming weeks. If you did not get it, be sure to read it here!
To the best
of our ability we will make sure that groups that sign up together work
in the same job sites and thus will be together more or less for the
entire time! Why, it will be just like being roommates again!
Well without the homework! Just let us know who is
in your group and presto: its spring break time again!
For alumni who can not make it to campus, we will be glad to meet you
in Biloxi. This also makes it possible for you to show up for
any portion of the week. Additionally, we can send out DVDs
to see what our fall trip was like and why you should come!
Who
will be there? I can not list everyone (it will
likely be over 200 people) but some of the faculty that will
be there include: Sister Margaret Carney (the president of the
University), Father Dan Riley, Father David Flood, Mike and Heather
Jackson, Todd Palmer, Joe Coate, Mike Kasperski, Terry Moran, and Jim
Mahar. There is absolutely no doubt that many more faculty
will be coming.
What
can I do to help?
- Come with us to help rebuild the Gulf
Coast
- Contact your friends and organize a group
of alumni that will meet us in March. Call your classmates,
your teammates, even that person who you thought you'd never see again
- Contact your favorite professor and ask
her/him to come. We have done very little "marketing" to
faculty
There is a need for people of all abilities. There will be
important work for you to do.
Top
Excuses shot down
- I am too busy to go. Of course
you are. But how many weeks of work are there? Try
to remember any specific week. No matter how much you love your job,
pretty soon all of the weeks start to blend together.
This will be a week you never forget! And on top
of that, it will be fun too! What more could you ask for?!
- I only get so many vacation days and
cannot use them for this. First, this will be better than
almost any vacation you can imagine. Having been to both
Hawaii and post Katrina Biloxi, I would pick Biloxi
again in a heartbeat (and it cost about 1/10th as
much). Secondly, even if you have to take a few days off
without pay, the trip will be well worth it.
Thirdly, you will be helping people which always
makes you feel better about yourself.
- My children have school. If
your children are in highschool, bring them. They can make up
the work and they will learn more working here than and extra few days
in school.
- I'm too tired. Volunteering
will create more energy for you than you can imagine. Larry
Orsini (former accounting professor) may have said it best in his
interview: "There is just such energy. I found myself waking
up at 3:00 AM ready to work.".
- I am not a volunteer type. I
would rather donate money and let someone else do it. While
much can be said about donating, getting your hands dirty
teaches you to understand what needs to be done and where your money is
going. This allows you to value your donations much more and
in all liklihood, give more in the future since you will see there
really is a need for help.
