 Annual Meetings and Conferences

Attending a conference is a great learning experience.  That is true whether you are presenting your own work, discussing someone else's paper, or just attending to learn.  Conferences are not cheap (often have $100 registration) but you can learn a great deal very quickly and also meet others in the field.

Remember the "call for papers" usually ends well in advance of the conference (often 6 months to a year prior to the conference.)

US-based International Conventions-These are the big ones.  The attract finance professionals (academics and practitioners) from around the world.
  1. The Financial Management Association--the FMA meetings are always a highlight on the year's Finance calendar. The main US meeting is held in October.   Highly Recommended!
  2. American Finance Association--Possibly the most prestigious of the finance conventions.  This is the group that  puts out the Journal of Finance.  The annual meetings are held in conjunction with the American Social Sciences Association meetings in January.  These meetings are much larger as they attract a wide range of economists as well.
Non-US International  Finance Conferences
  1. The European Financial Management Association holds its annual meeting in the early Summer.  They also have a list of other Finance meetings in Europe and throughout the world.

  2.
  3. The European Finance Association has the longest running finance convention in Europe. It is held in late august (usually just before US classes start so you can get that "working-vacation" in!

  4.
  5. The Asian-Pacific Finance Assoication holds its  annual meeting in July.

  6.
  7. The German Finance Association generally has their annual meetings in early October. Their web site is partially in English and part in German but can be translated by many browsers and the Alta Vista website.
US-Regionals- Regional conferences in the United States do not draw the crowds of an international conference, but are good ways to introduce a paper and to look into the future to see what people will be publishing in the coming months.  Regionals generally have higher paper acceptance rates (so the quality is more volatile) and are less high pressured.
  1. The Southern Finance Association's annual meeting is possible my favorite "regional."  The papers are usually pretty good and coming in November, it is a good opportunity to spend a few days in Southern warmth.
  2. The Western Finance Association's annual meeting is usually in June.  It is quite prestigious and has a great reputation.
  3. The Southwestern Finance Association's annual meetings are in the Spring.  They often serve as a "last chance" for Ph.D. interviews prior to the opening of the visiting professor market.  This is the annual meeting of the Journal of Financial Research
  4. The Midwestern Finance Association'sannual meeting is also usually held in the Spring.  THe organization has been around for over 50 years and publishes the Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance
  5. The Eastern Finance Association's annual meeting is held in the late spring.  Unfortunately the timing of this is usually associated with the busy time at school so I have never attended.  This is the annual meeting of the Financial Review.
  6. The Financial Education Association publishes the Journal of Financial Education
