Text:
The Financial System and the Economy: Principles of Money and Banking
by Burton and Lombra, 2nd edition. It is available at the bookstore or
online from the class website and from many other online sources.
Website: http://www.financeprofessor.com
or a local SBU address when I recieive it.
You are expected to check the website frequently. It will be a main
channel
of communication: grades will be posted, assignments
made, and tips given through the site. If used correctly, the web usage
will dramatically improve the learning process and will eliminate many
of the time-consuming trips across campus as well as cut down on lost assignments,
reduce paper use, and make the class more fun.
Additional requirement:
Wall Street Journal. Possibly the best education you can get while
at school. Read it, enjoy it. Widely used in the business world and we
will be tying many topics to it. Additionally there will be test coverage
;-)
Objective: This class will serve as an introduction to
the world of money and banking. As such it may serve as an introduction
to the financial world. It will be a more widespread or macro view of the
financial world than is covered in corporate finance. It will lay the important
foundation for your later studies and hopefully will interest you and allow
you to appreciate the topic. The focus will be on the banking system in
the US and how its role in the economy.
Grading: Grades will be based on two main areas:
1.Your homework, project, and class participation 15%
2.Tests
Test 1 ............20%
Test 2 ........... 30%
Final ..............35%
You will be graded on your ability to present your findings
in a clear and understandable form. Therefore your financial
knowledge is only a portion of the grade. You will also be
graded on your presentation skills and your interpersonal skills.
Cheating will not be tolerated. This includes plagiarism, cheating
on tests, and telling others of a test prior to the other person taking
the test. Failure to comply with this rule will be dealt with the greatest
severity allowed.
Now that the administrative trivia is complete, I do want to say that
I truly hope this is a fun class. I want it to be a learning experience
but learning need not always be painful. I do not want to (nor do I want
you to) dread the class. It should be fun. Thus the class will be quite
informal but also rigorous. I am sure that you will learn a great deal
and have fun doing it!
